Tortoise-shell with miniature of roses in a bowl and fruit in a dish and on a slab, within a border of scrolling foliage
Tortoise-shell set with a miniature in bodycolour and watercolour on card, mounted under glass in gilt metal. The circular box has slightly concave sides and an almost flat pull-off lid. Round the edge of the lid is a border of pressed tortoise-shell decoration of rosettes and swags. The gilt metal mount has a border of stylised leaves. The tortoise-shell base has a pressed wrigglework pattern and basketwork border. The circular miniature depicts a bowl of roses and a plate of plums next to peaches, pomegranates and grapes on a marble slab. Round the miniature is painted a border of scrolling foliage.
