Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 150 x 151 mm, two four-line musical staves ruled in red and two fragmentary lines of text ruled in pale brown ink on reverse.

CONTENTS: On reverse, fragmentary text from an antiphon used in the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption: reuertere su[lamitis. reu]ertere reuerte[re ut intueamur te] (Cant 6, 12-13); the initial G would have opened the introit to the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption, Gaudeamus omnes.

DECORATION: Historiated initial with letter formed of zoomorphic and foliate forms, on a solid gold ground with angels, leaves and jewel motifs: [G] Assumption of the Virgin.

History note: The Rev. Montague Taylor, who lent it to the exhibition at the South Kensington Museum in June 1862 (no. 6895); sold at Sotheby’s, May 19-21, 1897, lot 137
