Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 99 x 146 mm, two segments pasted together on a nineteenth-century cardboard mount.

DECORATION: Two corner-pieces from an historiated border, St Luke on left, St Matthew on right, each seated at their desk between classical pilasters with swags and accompanied by their attributes, two plaques in painted gold, one on each of the outer pilasters, bearing text INNOCENT and PAPA.VIII (possibly later additions).

History note: From a Missal made for Pope Innocent VIII (r. 1484-1492); Abate Luigi Celotti (c.1768- c.1846); his sale, Christie’s, London, 26 May 1825, lot 39; William Young Ottley (1771-1836); his sale, Sotheby’s, 11 May 1838, lot 231; Samuel Rogers (note on cardboard mount, but not identifiable in his sale, Christie’s, London, 6 May 1856); Thomas Miller Whitehead, acquired in May 1855 (note on cardboard mount), probably purchased from Samuel Rogers privately.
