Leaf from a Doge’s Commission

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 208 x 147 mm, pasted on parchment mount.
DECORATION: Full-page oval miniature with recipient kneeling and holding a richly-bound book while being presented to the Virgin and Child by St Mark, with St Anthony Abbot reading behind him, surrounded by a full inhabited border in gold formal ornament with medallions housing the lion of St Mark in the upper bar, Justice and Prosperity painted in grisaille on blue grounds on left and right respectively, and the arms of the Contarini family (bendy or and azure) in the lower bar.
History note: Commission produced for a member of the Contarini family, Venice
