Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment 456 x 330 mm, miniature 262 x 202 mm, pasted on white cardboard.

CONTENTS: Easter hymn Colla madre del be[ato gaudiamo]. Although the miniature is pasted on a thick white cardboard, Agostino Ziino, using a photograph taken under ultra-violet light, proposed two possible readings, XXI or LXI, and favoured the former (Ziino 1989, 1468–70). A recent examination, with UV and IR photography, revealed that the number on the reverse is LXII.

DECORATION: Resurrection and Three Marys at the Tomb surrounded by a floral and acanthus border including a peacock, a male and a female member of the Compagnia di Sant’ Agnese shown in supplication in the lower margin, and eight medallion scenes showing (from top left) the risen Christ revealing himself to the Virgin, to Mary Magdalene, to Saints Peter and John, to James the Less, and to two disciples on their way to Emmaus, the Supper at Emmaus, Christ revealing himself to the Apostles, and to the doubting Thomas.

ORNAMENTATION: Alternate blue and red penwork initials [1-2 ll.] with red or violet pen-flourished infill and extensions for the beginning of stanzas.
