Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment 190 x 230 mm, miniature 185 x 225 mm, pasted on white cardboard, nine lines of fragmentary text on reverse partially revealed.

CONTENTS: Fragmentary text revealed by the partially removed cardboard:
tanto onore…
Quando…
…ueram…

DECORATION: Large framed miniatures on burnished gold or coloured backgrounds, some preserving marginal scenes and decoration:
Martyrdoms of St Peter (left) and St Paul (right). St Peter is shown crucified head down between the two monuments, Meta Romuli and Nero’s Terebinthus, near the site of his martyrdom in the Circus of Nero. St Paul’s martyrdom shows him being beheaded at Aquae Salviae (now Tre Fontane), the three springs created, according to legend, as his decapitated head bounced three times, and then returning Plautilla’s veil which was used to blindfold him during the decollation.

ORNAMENTATION: Alternate blue and red penwork initials [1-2 ll.] with red or violet pen-flourished infill and extensions for the beginning of stanzas.
