Description
Bone china, transfer-printed in red, and painted in polychrome enamels with Chinese figures in gardens reserved in a pink diapered ground; gold lustre on knob
Bone china, the oval pot slip-cast (?), the stand press-moulded, transfer-printed onglaze rather carelessly in red, and painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, red, puce, purple, and black enamels, and gold lustre (knob). The New Oval shape pot has a reserve on each side framed by red C-scrolls reserved in a puce diapered ground which ends at the shoulder. The reserve on one side is occupied by a Chinese boy, a basket on the ground, a kneeling man presenting flower to a man holding a whip who stands beside a tree and a rock; in the background to left is a house with upturned roof and a first floor balcony. On the other side is the same scene (but not identical) is reversed. There are red bands round the shoulder and upper edge, the end of the spout and the edges of the handle. The cover has a puce diapered border broken at the cardinal points by floral sprays in quatrefoil reserves with red C-scrolled edges, and the knob is decorated with gold lustre strokes radiating from the central 'nipple'. The oval stand has shallow, slightly everted sides. It is decorated with the same scene with larger scale figures, surrounded by a puce diapered border broken at the cardinal points by a floral sprays in quatrefoil reserves with red C-scrolled edges.

Note
Possibly made in the Machin factory. According to Geoffrey Godden (see Documentation) Joseph Machin was recorded at Holehouse, Waterloo Road, Burslem between 1802-18 and Machin & Co. was listed between 1812 and 1818 at Holeshouse Works.
