Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 200 x 211 mm (Marlay cutting It. 65) and 189 x 210 mm (Marlay cutting It. 66), both reverse sides obscured by paper mounts, traces of musical staves ruled in red ink and fragmentary text with ruling in brown ink on rectos.

CONTENTS: The initial would have introduced the responsory at Matins for the feast of St Andrew Apostle, Dum perambularet Dominus iuxta mare Galiliaeae, vidit Petrum et Andream (Rom 10:4), or the introit to the Mass for the feast of the Vigil of St Andrew, Dominus secus mare galilaea.

DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of complex foliate motifs and a cherub’s face with wings: [D] Christ calling Saints Peter and Andrew.

ORNAMENTATION: Traces of black penwork flourishing to text.

Notes

History note: Possibly from the collection of Pierre-Henri Gélis-Didot (1853-1902); not yet identified in the multi-part lots in his sale, Paris 12-13 April 1897
