Description

Hybrid hard-paste porcelain painted in enamels with a Chinese scene known as 'The Boy with a Butterfly'. Pattern no. 421.

Hybrid hard-paste porcelain painted in two shades of blue, two shades of green, dark pink, dark puce, red, brown, and black enamels. The cup has deep curved sides, and stands on a footring. The saucer has shallow curved sides and a footring. The interior of the cup is decorated at the bottom with a red plant, and round the rim with two narrow red lines under which are four stylized plants with a circle below each. The exterior is decorated with a continuous Chinese scene: two fuzzy black bushes behind a red fence; a woman wearing green and puce clothing standing holding a sceptre; a black bush and a rock beside a flowering tree; a boy dressed in green and dark puce who is holding up his arms towards a butterfly; two black bushes flanking a flowering tree; a standing man dressed in blue. The ground is indicated by horizontal brown strokes. The saucer is decorated to match with rocks, and black bushes beside a tree; a boy holding up arms to reach a butterfly, and the same man and woman standing close together beisde the boy in front of a red fence and black fuzzy bush. Round the edge there is a border matching that on the cup. Pattern 421.
