Description

Hard-paste porcelain painted in polychrome enamels

Hard-paste porcelain, slip cast, and painted overglaze in blue, greyish-blue, green, yellow, tanned flesh, red, purple, brown, grey, and black enamels. The underside has a recessed rounded square in the centre with a very small ventilation hole in the back viewer's right corner. The girl kneels, sitting back on her heels, and holds to her chest in each hand a posy of mixed flowers. Her black hair is tied up in a small knot on the top of her head with a red band. She wears a red tunic with a high brown neck and cuffs, and shawl collar with a multi-coloured geometrical pattern, and a greyish blue lower edge with two rectangular red-edged flaps at the front; brown knee breeches, and red boots with a multi-colour stripe up their fronts.

Note

The girl is wearing the nation costume of Greenland which has a large embroidered beadwork collar around the shoulders. It was one of a series of figures in national costume modelled by Hansen between 1906 and 1925.
