Note

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Annie Turner trained at Bristol Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, London, setting up her first studio in 1984, in London. She has exhibited widely and teaches at Wimbledon School of Art and City Lit, London. In 1997, she established her present studio in Camberwell. She was one of the artists featured in a BBC documentary Contemporary Visions in 2003. All of her recent work draws on an intimate exploration of the ecology and history of the River Deben in Suffolk. She pushes the technical limits of ceramic form to create fragile structures that both contain and suggest fragments of this shifting waterland. ‘Turner imprints the river’s flotsam and jetsam on her work to create “objects that trigger the memory”. The resultant encrusted surfaces evoke the varied textures of the county’s waterways and skyscapes. Turner regards the Deben as a constantly transforming “living vessel” and Net, strong yet fragile, enclosed yet pervious, also has an aspect of containment for the artist where memories and associations are gathered, stored and preserved.’-Dr Victoria Avery, Keeper of Applied Arts, The Fitzwilliam Museum
