PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern paper flyleaves + i seventeenth-century paper flyleaf + 215 fols. + ii modern paper flyleaves, 350 x 230 mm (290 x 170 mm), three columns, 68-70 lines, ruled in plummet and brown ink.

BINDING: Nineteenth century, yellow morocco over wooden boards, by Clyde, 9 Newman Street, London.

Three-part framed panel articulated by four columns and architectural motifs on plain parchment ground with floral ornament, and displaying the arms, helm, crest and mantling of Foscari on either side, and, in the centre, letter A formed of blue and red twisted, ribbon-like scroll, with the crest of Foscari within it, beneath the panel historiated initial [C, 15 ll.] in blue on plain parchment ground with floral ornament: Author seated on a bench, pointing at an open book on a lectern and addressing the reader-viewer (fol. 7r).

ORNAMENTATION: Letters of the alphabet formed of green and red twisted, ribbon-like scrolls, surrounded by red frames and heading each column in the Index (fols. 1r-5v).

Notes

History note: Copied for Francesco Foscari, Doge of Venice (1423-1457), whose arms form part of the decoration (fol. 7r), in 1423 by Iohannes of Treviso, as recorded in the colophon (fol. 213v): Explicit expositio vocabulorum ex sententia Ugutionis compillatione Jacobi quondam magistri Ysaac phisici de Padua completa clugie anno nativitatis domini nostri Yhesu Christi Millesimo trecentesimo vigesimo quarto de mense novembris et scripta per me Johannem quondam domini Silvestri deluxe venetiarum originarium et tarvisii civem et completa die Martis primo mensis Februarii Mccccxxvi in castro catari civis castri pro Serenissimo et excellentissimo ducali domino venetiarum tunc fueram castelanus. Hunc enim librum scripsi ad honorem Serenissimi principis et excellentissimi domini mei singularissimi domini Francisci Fuscari dei grati Incliti ducis Venetiarum etc.; erasure of an oval ink stamp (fol. 1r, offset on facing flyleaf, which also contains an erasure of a one-line inscription); Bertram, fourth earl of Ashburnham (1797–1878), Ashburnham Appendix, no.
