PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i modern parchment flyleaf + 162 fols. + i modern parchment flyleaf, 107 x 75 mm (50 x 40 mm), 14 long lines, ruled in faint brown ink.
BINDING: Nineteenth century, green velvet over wooden boards, silver clasp (lower cover) and catchplate (upper cover) with niello decoration, edges gilt.

DECORATION: Four historiated initials in pink with delicate white foliate ornament or green acanthus (except fol. 14r, faceted pink initial), with hybrid heads or acanthus extensions on gold grounds, and full floral borders within gold frames containing medallions with birds, animals and butterflies: fol. 14r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, [D, 8 ll.] Virgin and Child, with medallion in the lower border over-painted with a variant of the arms of the Buonafede family (or a mount of six tops azure a bull salient gules), which normally show a green mount (Wormald and Giles 1982, 330); fol. 86r Penitential Psalms, [D, 8 ll.] David holding a rebec; fol. 108r Office of the Dead, [D, 8 ll.] Skull and bones; fol. 145v Short Hours of the Cross, [D, 7 ll.] Cross on Golgotha, with Crown of Thorns encircling the top, with two border medallions enclosing a stag and the profile of a child wearing a jewelled cap.
ORNAMENTATION: Pink or green initials [5 ll.] with delicate white floral ornament and floral or acanthus infill and extensions on gold grounds, accompanied by gold, blue and green side bar borders linking the upper and lower floral borders, for lesser text divisions (fols. 26v, 39r, 44r, 48v, 53r, 57r, 64v, 114v, 147r, 147v, 148r, 148v, 149r); gold initials [2 ll.] on pink or green grounds; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with violet or red pen flourishing.
History note: Variant of the arms of the Buonafede family painted over an earlier shield (fol. 14r); Alfred Aaron de Pass (1861-1952); his gift, 1933.
