PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i paper flyleaf + 221 fols. + i paper flyleaf, 137 x 90 mm (75 x 45 mm), 13 long lines, ruled in brown ink, catchwords
BINDING: Nineteenth century, red velvet over wooden boards, two pairs of silver clasps (on lower cover) and catchplates (on upper cover) engraved with a rose design, edges gilt and gauffered.

ORNAMENTATION: Faceted initials [7 ll.] in blue or pink on solid gold grounds with floral ornament for major text divisions (fols. 1r, 93r, 121r, 171r, 187r, 194r), the first one accompanied by a full strewn-flower border of gold ground, incorporating the arms of the Rusticelli family (on a shield sable, a spread eagle argent semé of crescents, charged with a cross gules, fol. 1r); alternate red and blue penwork initials [2 ll.] with pen-flourished infill and extensions on fols. 161r-170v only (a quire copied by a different scribe and decorated by a different artist); alternate red and blue penwork initials [1-2 ll.] throughout the rest of the manuscript; incipits of major text divisions written in gold; calligraphic, cadel-like capitals.
History note: Made for a member of the Rusticelly family of Tuscany (arms on fol. 13r); cutting from a Sotheby’s sale catalogue (with erroneous identification of the arms as those of the Alidosi family) pasted on front flyleaf; James Stewart Henderson (d.1933); his bequest, 1933.
