Leaf from a Missal
Artist: Master of the Hindman leaves
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, approx. 367 x 247 mm (230 x 165 mm), two columns, 26 lines, ruled in plummet.
CONTENTS: Blessing of the candles at the Mass for the Purification of the Virgin (2 Feb.) and (on the reverse) the Introit for the Mass and the Collect illustrated by the initial, Omnipotens sempiterne deus maiestatem tuam.
DECORATION: Historiated initial in graded pink and gold on blue and gold grounds, with acanthus extensions with gold leaves and balls: Collect for the Mass for the Purification of the Virgin, [O, 6 ll.] Presentation to the Temple.
ORNAMENTATION: alternate red and blue penwork initials [2 ll.] with purple or red pen-flourished infill and extensions’ alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials; capitals highlighted in yellow.
History note: Two red dots (9 mm diameter) from glue or a stamp and the numbers 66, 67, 68 and 69 penciled on reverse
