Leaf from a Missal
Artist: Master of the Hindman leaves
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, approx. 367 x 247 mm (230 x 165 mm), two columns, 26 lines, ruled in plummet.
CONTENTS: Mass for the feast of St Peter in Chains (1 Aug.) with the Collect illustrated by the initial, Deus qui apostolis tuis, followed by the readings from the Acts of the Apostles 10:42 and (on the reverse) from the Gospel of St John 3:16
ORNAMENTATION: Graded pink initial [D, 6 ll.] with gold ornament on blue ground, stylized foliate infill on red ground, and acanthus extensions with gold leaves and balls for the Collect at the Mass for the feast of St Peter in Chains (MS McClean 201.11c); alternate red and blue penwork initials [2 ll.] with purple or red pen-flourished infill and extensions’ alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials; capitals highlighted in yellow.
History note: Two red dots (9 mm diameter) from glue or a stamp and the numbers 66, 67, 68 and 69 penciled on reverse
