Leaf from an Antiphoner
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 475 x 345 mm (358 x 258 mm), eight four-line musical staves ruled in red ink and eight lines of text ruled in black ink on both sides of the leaf
CONTENTS: Antiphon and response for vespers, followed by the Invitatory of Matins for the first Sunday in Advent, Regem venturum, antiphons, psalms, and (on reverse) the responsory for the first nocturn of Matins for the first Sunday in Advent, Aspiciens a longe, which opens with the large ornamental initial.
ORNAMENTATION: Blue and red (darkened to brown) initial [A, 4 ll.] filled with interlaced foliate scrolls and surmounted by knotwork ornament on framed quadripartite blue and red ground with geometric designs; blue and red parted initial [V, 1 l.] with pen-flourished infill for the antiphon, Veniet ecce rex; alternate blue and red one-line penwork initials with red or blue pen flourishing; capitals highlighted in red.
