BINDING: Fifteenth century, dark red-brown leather over wooden boards, blind- and gold-stamped with interlaced ropework, sewn on three double supports, four metal cornerpieces and a central metal cross-shaped boss decorated with low relief foliage on each cover, remains of four straps on upper cover, four catchplates on lower cover

DECORATION: Full-page framed miniature with a wide gold frame with ornamental foliage patterns in black ink and foliage sprays with gold balls extending from the centre on all four sides: fol. 131v Crucifixion with the Virgin, St John and St Mary Magdalene embracing the foot of the cross.
ORNAMENTATION: Fifteen acanthus initials [3-8 ll.] with foliate or ornamental infill, with ornamental acanthus foliage sprays proportionate in size to the initials, most on gold grounds, extending into the vertical and horizontal borders, and containing large acanthus leaves and other foliage interspersed with black sprays and prominent gold balls (e.g. fols. 1r, 16v, 23r, 132r, 136r), mainly in dark purple-red, green and dull blue, occasionally in orange.
History note: Late fifteenth-century inscription on fol. iv, Hoc Missale est fraternit(at)e Noliani(?), referring to a lay or third order confraternity; price £10 written inside upper cover; purchased for the Museum in 1891.
