Description
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i parchment flyleaf + 252 fols., 484 x 347 mm (330 x 245 mm), six four-line musical staves ruled in red ink, six text lines, one below each stave, ruled in plummet, catchwords.
BINDING: Seventeenth century, blind-stamped brown leather over wooden boards, traces of four catchplates on upper cover and of four corner pieces and a round centrepiece on each cover, rebound in the twentieth century with two leather straps added on lower cover and two catchplates on upper cover.
CONTENTS: fols. 1r-211v Temporal beginning imperfectly at the Magnificat at Vespers on Saturday before Sexagesima and ending with the Last Sunday after Pentecost; fols. 212r-251r Temporal Matins Offices for August through November.
DECORATION: Historiated initial in buff, blue, green and orange on blue ground: fol. 168r Responsory to Lesson I at Matins of Ascension Day, Post passionem, [P, 12 ll.] Three-quarter length figure of Christ blessing.
ORNAMENTATION: Framed initials [6-12 ll.] containing blue, orange, pink, beige and gold foliage infill of acanthus leaves and stylised foliate forms for the responsories to Lesson I at Matins for all of the main Sundays and feast days (e.g. fols. 1r, 9v, 20v, 33v, 44r, 57v, 69r, 83r, 99v, 108v, 117r, 124v, 148v, 160v, 177v); red, blue and purple pen-flourished initials [4-6 ll.] with penwork surrounds for versicles and responsories for the lesser Sundays and feast days.
