Description

Gold, engine turned and chased box, the lid set with a portait miniature of a young woman in a pink dress

Gold, engine turned and chased, the top of the lid set with a portrait miniature painted in watercolour and bodycolour on ivory, under glass. The circular box has straight sides and a flat pull-off lid. The sides of the box are engraved with vertical stripes of engine-turned decoration, the base with concentric rings. Round the edge of the lid and base and at the top and bottom of the sides are borders of stiff leaf decoration on a matted ground. The circular portrait of Elizabeth Montgomery depicts her facing three-quarters to the right; her light brown hair is worn high with two ringlets over her left shoulder. She wears a low cut dress of pink silk, the gauze collar is caught with pink roses at the front. The background is painted blue-grey.

Note

Jeremias Majer (also known as Jeremiah Meyer) was born in Tübingen, where his father was portrait painter to the Duke of Würtemberg. He came to England aged fourteen. He was given tuition in enamel painting by Zincke, but his claim to pre-eminence as a miniaturist depends on his watercolours on ivory. Mayer painted prtraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte and was a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768.

Pierre-François Mathis de Beaulieu registered as Master in Paris on 23 July 1758 and worked until 1791.
