PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, iii modern parchment flyleaves + 85 fols. + iii modern parchment flyleaves, 185 x 129 mm (140 x 86 mm), 5 lines of text ruled in plummet and 5 five-line musical staves ruled in red ink

BINDING: Nineteenth century, brown leather with a stamped frame and central cartouche over wooden boards.

DECORATION: Decoration is only found in the added nineteenth-century illumination which will be described in detail in an appendix on post-1700 illuminated manuscripts to be included in a future volume. This includes in the side and lower borders painted figures of angels in various poses holding various objects, grotesque mask heads, figures of saints, pontifical vestments and insignia, liturgical vessels, ecclesiastical banners, and devotional emblems such as the Sacred Heart.

ORNAMENTATION: Initials [1-2 musical staves and 1-2 text ll.] with penwork infill and frames in red, blue, purple and occasionally gold (e.g. fols. 3v, 7r), some containing flowers and parti-coloured stems (e.g. fol. 1r); cadel initials [1 musical stave and + 1 text line] in black ink; nineteenth-century additions consisting of tendrils of foliage and flowers in the borders on many pages, and foliage sprays in the cadel initials and as extensions to some of the penwork initials.

Notes

History note: The bookplate inside the upper cover was said perhaps to be of Gibson Craig (James 1912a, 106), the arms, argent a stag's head embossed gules on a chief azure a mullet argent, are of Thomson, and are probably those of the bibliophile, James Thomson Gibson-Craig, who adopted his mother's name and arms; purchased by Frank McClean (1837-1904) in a Sotheby’s sale c.1887-1888 (catalogue cutting with lot 552 inside upper cover)
