Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, iii paper flyleaves + 287 fols. (foliated i-vi, 1-281) + iii paper flyleaves, 254 x 176 mm (162 x 122 mm), two columns, 23 lines, ruled in plummet, catchwords

BINDING: Contemporary and twentieth century, rebound in 1995 by Annie Winther at the Fitzwilliam Museum, new brown-stained calf over original wooden boards, fragmentary original covers of blind-stamped calf pasted over new calf, traces of two fastening devices on original upper cover.

ORNAMENTATION: Alternate red and blue pen-flourished initials [2 - 6 ll.] containing foliage and geometric patterns, in some cases silhouetted against red and blue backgrounds, some with large penwork extensions, the larger initials with parti-coloured stems (e.g. fols. 1r, 123r, 249r).

History note: A Franciscan convent in Siena; purchased from Payne and Foss in 1848 by Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872 ), his MS 12288 (inscribed inside upper cover); his sale, Sotheby's, London, 10-17 June 1896, lot 139 (‘Ex bibl. Phillipps '96, no.139’ inscribed inside upper cover)
