Description

The bell-shaped body encircled with an arabesque foliate band upon spool stem & domical foot. Geoffrey Gilbert was mentioned as a goldsmith in Ipswich as early as c.1525 & thereafter several times until he died in 1570. He had sons, one of whom, William, was also a goldsmith, born about 1548. This cups bears the single G, often associated with Ipswich, & continued by subsequent generations, all working in or around Ipswich. Hence its later possible attribution.
