Publisher’s proofs for the first book edition of Jude the Obscure, annotated by the author
Author:
Hardy, Thomas (writer)
Publisher:
Osgood, McIlvaine and Co.
After publication in serial form in the English and European editions of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine from December 1894 to November 1895, Jude the Obscure was first published as a book in London by Osgood, McIlvaine and Company in November 1895 (post-dated 1896). These publisher’s proofs show that Hardy grasped the opportunity to restore the original text and elaborate on it, after he had been obliged to sanitise it for the family readership of Harper’s Magazine.
The unbound proofs were heavily annotated by Hardy in 1895, and also contain the comments of the printer’s reader, George F. Stewart. When examined side by side Hardy’s autograph manuscript (MS 1-1911), they offer rare insights into Hardy’s creative process and ample material for the study of literary censorship and social history.
Proof copy with corrections by Thomas Hardyvi, 516p. With handwritten note to the printer signed "T Hardy"
