Whampoa Anchorage
Whampoa is situated 10-16 miles from Canton and was the closest the Western ships could get to port before the water became too shallow. All the foreign ships anchored at Whampoa to load or unload their cargos. Subsequently, the crew and cargo relied on sampans and other small boats to transport in and out of Canton. This image shows panoramic view of the anchorage from Danes Island; it includes three famous pagodas used as navigation points.
Previously described as "Whampoa".
