Warrior
Sunqua (Attributed)
A watercolour drawing from the album 4166. This image depicts a male Qing military official in a seated position beside a planted jardinière. The figure wears elaborate military dress including a dark blue and black quilted armour with geometric patterns and decorative elements. He wears a distinctive helmet with blue decorative elements, earflaps, and red and orange plume feathers on top. The official holds a long spear or halberd with a red tassel beneath the blade. Across his lap lies an ornately decorated shooting bow. Next to him is a red wooden plant stand holding a blue ceramic pot with lotus flowers and leaves. The lotus blooms are white, and the arrangement includes several buds at different stages of development. The painting is executed in the style typical of Chinese export art from around the late 18th or early 19th century, with careful attention to details in the clothing and furniture. The style combines Chinese painting techniques with elements designed to appeal to Western tastes, particularly in the detailed rendering of the figures' clothing and accessories.
