Description

A watercolour drawing from the album 4171. This image depicts a pair of silver pheasants (Lophura nycthemera) positioned on mossy rocks in a natural landscape setting. The male pheasant displays his characteristic dark reddish-brown plumage with a distinctive red facial patch and comb, while the female exhibits more subdued grey and white coloring with delicate scaled patterning across her body and an elegant long tail. The setting features rocks covered with green moss, creating a naturalistic habitat for the birds. Blue flowering plants emerge from behind the rocks where the pheasants perch. Delicate branches with fine needle-like foliage, suggesting coniferous vegetation, frame the upper portion of the composition. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combining ornithological documentation and traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style.
