Parenthood
Maker: Hull, Andrew
Stoneware, slip-cast, and hand-decorated with coloured stoneware glazes
Stoneware, slip-cast, clear-glazed inside, and hand-decorated outside with shades of blue, greyish-green, dull brownish-yellow, and shades of pale to very dark brown stoneware glazes; the underside is closed and has a glazed central rectangle with an unglazed border. The rectangular base has rounded corners and many indentations under a dark brown glaze. It supports two grotesque birds: a tall father bird who has a removable head with a large pointed beak, huge clawed feet, his right wing outstretched and his left protectively round the shoulders of his smaller offspring who has a parrot-like beak. Both are decorated with contrasting areas of the various colours. The body of the large bird has a cylindrical neck over which the hollow head is positioned.

Andrew Hull Pottery was founded in 2007. 'Parenthood' was inspired by the Museum's Martinware owl (C.41 & A-1928), and also by a photograph of himself and his father taken in the 1970s. The model is no 8 of an edition of 30, and is one of a series of bird and animal figures in Andrew Hull's 'Character Collection'. He explains it as 'Dad keeps an eye on his son as they watch the football match. There is a bond between two through their favourite team.'
