Bone china, of 'Queen Anne' shape decorated with claret ground colour, painting in polychrome enamels (not red), jewelling in turquoise and white enamel, and gilding
Bone china, decorated with claret ground colour, painting in polychrome enamels (not red), jewelling in turquoise and white enamel, and gilding. The cup is of ‘Queen Anne’ shape with a harp-shaped handle (i.e. four sided with deep sloping sides, incurved flutes between them, standing on a circular footring). The saucer is four sided with incurved fluted corners, standing on a circular footring. The cup is decorated with two panels painted respectively with a duck and another sea bird, and with two panels with a claret ground overlaid by a gold lozenge-shaped motif with turquoise jewels on the corners suspended from a bow with tails extending to right and left which support a swag of flowers and foliage all in slightly raised gold. Round the lowest part of the cup there is gold scale pattern. There is a gold band round the footring and the top edge, and vertical lines on the fluting between the sides. The handle is gilding on the outside. The interior of the saucer is decorated en suite with a pheasant and another standing bird, two claret ground panels, and gold scale pattern surrounding the reserved emplacement for the cup.
