Bone china, decorated with a pale grey ground, painting in greyish-blue, dark green, yellow, brown, mauve, grey, and black enamels, and gilding. The mug is cylindrical with slightly sloping sides and projecting base. The handle is approximately ear-shaped but is flat on top. The exterior of the mug has a pale grey ground with an almost circular reserve painted with a winter landscape with a parish church in the distance. The reserve is enclosed by a narrow gold frame which has a gilded bird on a branch on the left and a flowering branch on the right in Japanese style. There are bands of gilding on the top and bottom edges, and down the sides of the handle, which also has a brush stoke on the top and on the back.
