Note

This is the earliest (by three years) dated sampler of its type, worked eight years after the foundation of Ackworth school. Archival evidence in the Ackworth archives, Friends House and the Lincolnshire Records office provides an unusually detailed family history/provenance for the object. The Fitzwilliam already has one small Ackworth darning sampler and a monochrome Quaker (not Ackworth) medallion sampler. This dated polychrome work is therefore a really important and attractive addition to the collection. The initials 'DJ' stand for Deborah Jones, the mother of Ann Jones.
