Description

Earthenware decorated with oxide colours under lead-glaze; tortoiseshell ware

Dark cream earthenware with applied moulded spout, applied handle, applied moulded reliefs, touched with greyish-blue, green and yellow oxide colours, and speckled overall with manganese-brown under lead-glaze. The globular pot has a crabstock spout and a twisted ‘rope’ handle, and stands on a slight footrim. The slightly domed circular cover has a ventilation holeand a flat flower-shaped knob. Both sides of the pot are decorated with the same four different applied reliefs composed of strapwork, scrolls, foliage and flowers, and there are three different smaller reliefs on the cover.
