Description

Creamware painted in polychrome enamels with floral spray, sprigs, butterfly, bird in flight and bug

Cream earthenware, moulded and fluted, with applied handle, lead-glazed and painted in blue, two shades of green, yellow, red, purple, and black enamels. The cylindrical can is fluted on the lower two-thirds of the exterior, and has a twisted double strap handle with leaf terminals at top and bottom. The sides are painted with one large mixed floral spray with on the left two floral sprigs and a colourful butterfly, and on the right, a beetle, a bird with a red breast, and a rose sprig. The top has a border of purple fern fronds, with a purple band on the rim, and another round the base of the can. The edges of the handles and terminals are outlined in purple, and there are short strokes of graduated side down their backs.
