Description

A large, hand-coloured lithographic cut-out of a posy of flowers affixed to paper with a wood-engraved border of lace, printed in blue. The paper is overlaid and cut, a feature known as a 'cobweb', and can be lifted with the attached silk thread to reveal a hand-coloured lithograph of a naked boy, Cupid in a small sail-boat. Cupid holds onto a string attached to a winged envelope which pulls the boat along. The printed motto above reads: "to her I love sincerely". A verse is printed on the card above and below the flowers: "Search if thou wilt, my inmost heart / Bid every thought from thence depart ...". Inside the card is a hand-written verse to a person called Saragh with small, diamond-shaped pieces of coloured card printed with the mottos above and below: "Unity is strength" and "For thee". The valentine has been folded for delivery and the scorch marks on the paper possibly relate to the process of melting the sealing wax.
