Description

A small valentine composed of three layers; embossed paper with scalloped edge, tinted blue and a layer of cream lace-paper over; onto which is mounted a die-cut frame embossed and printed with green and gold ink. Within the central oval aperture is a die-cut chromolithograph of a girl and boy wearing historical dress who gaze down at a forget-me-not flower. Ornamental dried grasses are arranged behind the frame and form a backdrop to the central image. Scraps of wild flowers are affixed at lower and left and right corners of the frame and a die-cut posy with motto printed on a scroll at upper centre: "I love thee". A white gauze ribbon is pinned behind the motto and small, white gauze flwoers are affixed to the four corners of the frame. Opens to inscription in pencil of the year "1823". The date may have been added by a dealer or collector at some point, but is unlikely to reflect the production date, as the style, especially the use of ornamental grasses, is consistent with valentine manufacture of the 1850s.
