Faithful to Thee
Printmaker: Mansell, Joseph
Embossed paper with flowers in green and silver, with a central oval silk panel with silver lace-paper border, hand-painted (as embroidery) with the motto "FAITHFUL / TO THEE". The panel opens with a lilac ribbon to reveal a Baxter process print of a lady with a bird in a birdcage. The print was made by valentine manufacturer, Joseph Mansell and has been cut out and pasted onto the inside page. It is not known if Mansell was also the manufacturer of the embossed front paper or other elements of the valentine, however. Joseph Mansell became a licensee of the George Baxter colour printing process from around 1850. The print is composed of a 'key' plate of aquatint with stippling and woodblock colour printing overlaid. This particular image is known as 'The Bird Cage' and is one of a set of eight featuring women involved in various leisure pursuits. See, _A Pictorial Catalogue of Joseph Mansell's Baxter Process Prints_, compiled by Michael Martin, Brian Lawrence, Roger Smith for the New Baxter Society, 2006, Sheet 32, Ladies at Leisure, reproduced as no. 132, 'The Bird Cage', p. 45.
