Description

Silvered and white lace-paper with central, silk, heart-shaped flap bordered with lace-paper which lifts up with a silk ribbon to reveal a chromolithographic scene of sledging on a frozen pond. The heart-shaped flap is affixed with a die-cut, chromolithographic cherub's head in a garlanded roundel and a cut-paper, printed motto: 'I / LOVE/ TRUE / AND / FONDLY'. A small, embossed, gold tinsel 'mirror' with applied silk ribbon is affixed at upper centre. A collage of fabric, glittered leaves and artificial grass is affixed at lower centre to either side of a printed motto: 'THINE / AND THINE ONLY'. Inside is a handwritten poem with anonymous sign off as 'Well wisher', the verse dedication only partially accessible due to pasting of the front paper to the back at lower right): 'England / Thursday / 11th July / 1869 / Miss / Tis sweet to love / but sweeter [still] to be beloved again ... Well wisher'.
