Description

Quarto valentine, front-paper only. Border of embossed 'lace' over gilded paper and internal 'frame' of embossed 'lace' at the centre of which is a collage of hand-coloured, cut-paper pink roses and buds and leaves in the form of a standard rose bush with hand-painted details and a further cut-paper collage of forget-me-not flowers and leaves around the base of the trunk. Two flags of cut-paper with gilding are affixed to left and right with inscribed mottos: 'Hope / supports / me' and 'Through every / Danger, Constant'. The flags lift to reveal additional messages which may have been written by the sender: 'Love' and 'Hope'. Two cut-paper, embossed and hand-coloured birds are affixed to the paper at lower left and centre right. 'DOBBS, KIDD & CO. / LONDON', blind-stamped at lower centre.
