Valentine card Fire-Side Companions
Printmaker: Dobbs, Henry
White, embossed lace-paper of basket-weave flower garland design. See also no. 49 in this album, which employs the same central garland pattern, with additional hand-colouring of the embossed flower sections. The title is written in Dobbs's house-style at upper centre: 'Fire-Side / Companions'. A pair of novelty fire screens composed of silvered and glazed chromolithographs of flowers bordered with silvered paper and with gold tinsel 'handles' applied. The screens lift up to reveal Dobbs's handwritten motto, from left to right: 'U', 'and I'. 'DOBBS' and 'KIDD' blind-stamped onto the embossed bows at upper left and lower left. The interior is blank. Another example of this valentine design by Dobbs with slight variation in the decoration on the fire screens is in the collection of the Museum of London: 34.170/532.
