Description

Embossed lace-paper of a design of ferns, flowers and a man and woman reclining at lower left and right. Some hand-colouring of the embossed ferns and foliage. Two lozenge-shaped apertures at lower centre backed with panels of cream silk and mounted with a collage of silvered paper leaves, cut paper leaves and cloth flowers. A silvered cut-paper ornament of a bird carrying a letter to the left and a gold tinsel ornament of Cupid's bow and arrow to the right. A cut-paper open 'book' with lithographed image on the left of a flower garland around a golden dove carrying a letter addressed: 'TO MY / LOVE' and on the right, a verse: 'Fly oh fly my gentle dove / On thy transporting wing / Bear this missive to my love / And soon an answer bring'. At upper centre, a pink silk bow below an applied silk, pleated border with hand-painted additions in blue and pink paint. A cut-paper, hand-painted figure sitting on a rice-paper cloud, holding open a 'book' inscribed 'LOVE' and with a heart on the opposite leaf. The slight cutting off of the head of the figure may indicate that the silk ruffles have been flattened by successive years of flattening inside the album and so are sitting lower than they originally were. 'WINDSOR' is blind-stamped at lower left. The interior of the card is blank.
