Description

Valentine card of cream laid paper, roughly 8vo size with a lithograph of black ink (uncoloured) of a circular garland of flowers tied at upper centre with a bow. The lithographic drawing details the outlines of the flowers and leaves only and the design was obviously intended for hand-colouring. The garland encircles a medallion at the centre which contains a depiction of a true-love knot titled above and below: THE ENDLESS / KNOT OF LOVE. The true-love knot was common in early manifestation of valentines of the mid 17th century and contains a message that can be read at random from any line, having neither a beginning or an end. The knot in this print contains lines, reading from top left: "Love is a virtue that endures for Ever, A link of matchless jewels none can Sever …". The inside pages are blank. One of a series of cards on cream laid paper with uncoloured lithographs, apparently all later reprints, the designs possibly taken from collections of love poetry published in the early nineteenth century by James Kendrew of York, and mounted in album P.14348-R.
