Description

Valentine card of cream laid paper, roughly 8vo size with a lithograph of black ink (uncoloured) of a swag of flowers tied at each end with Cupid's bow and arrow and rested upon at the centre by a bird. A medallion at the centre shows a scene of Cupid giving his bow and arrows to a woman seated beneath a tree. A pair of doves rest on the branches above. Below is a printed verse: "Young Cupid tir'd of wounding Hearts, / Resign'd to Thee my FAIR his Darts; / And I thy matchless skill can prove, / And own thee beauteous Queen of Love." Two plinths to either side of the verse are surmounted by a pair of flaming hearts and a pair of doves. The inside pages are blank. One of a series of cards on cream laid paper with uncoloured lithographs, apparently all later reprints, the designs possibly taken from collections of love poetry published in the early nineteenth century by James Kendrew of York, and mounted in album P.14348-R.
