Valentine card
Printmaker: Unknown
Valentine card of cream laid paper, roughly 8vo size with a lithograph of black ink (uncoloured). A central medallion contains a scene of a sailor and his woman, "Poll". The sailor wears striped trousers and waistcoat and carries a bindle over his left shoulder. His ship is seen on the sea in the background to the left. A woman approaches from the right with outstretched arms. A putti/cupid flies towards "Poll" with a wreath, presumably with which to crown her. A printed verse at upper and lower centre: "Now, now, my dear Poll, I'm landed again, / and Shiners great plenty have got, / Let us join Hand & Heart, never to part / But share for ever our Lot." The inside pages are blank. One of a series of cards on cream laid paper with uncoloured lithographs, apparently all later reprints, the designs possibly taken from collections of love poetry published in the early nineteenth century by James Kendrew of York, and mounted in album P.14348-R. The Museum of London holds both coloured and uncoloured versions of this print; 34.170/988 and 34.170/989. See Ruth Webb Lee, _A History of Valentines_, B.T. Batsford, London, 1953, Plate 96, p.121.
