Valentine card
Printmaker: Unknown
Valentine card of cream laid paper, roughly 8vo size with a lithograph of black ink (uncoloured). A central vignette of a lady dressed in regency costume, sitting on a garden bench reading a letter which she holds in her left hand. A man watches her from the bushes behind. A printed verse above and below: "I want my dear maid a sweet partner / for life / So tell me in earnest if you will be / my Wife." The inside pages are blank. One of a series of cards on cream laid paper with uncoloured lithographs, apparently all later reprints, the designs possibly taken from collections of love poetry published in the early nineteenth century by James Kendrew of York, and mounted in album P.14348-R. This is very similar in style and design to P.14348-R-10 and must be from the same series.
