Valentine card
Printmaker: Gilks, Edward
Design for a valentine on a small sheet of white wove paper with a small lithograph of a young woman wearing a ball gown/wedding gown by Edward Gilks (signed at lower right: "E. GILKS lith.") cut out and affixed at upper centre. A verse in faded ink is written below: "To me, through every season, dearest, / In every scene - by day, by night - / Thou present to my mind appeared / A quenchless star for ever bright! ...". A blind stamp of prince of wales feathers within a border of curved scrolls at upper left corner of paper. An inscription in graphite at upper right corner: "28 x". As Edward Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, the lithograph and presumably the whole design, is most likely to have been produced during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to lithographer, Thomas Dean between 1836-1843 and prior to 1852. Album P.14346-R contains six lithographed valentine designs by Gilks, some of them proofs. See P.14346-R-35, P.14346-R-36, P.14346-R-37, P.14346-R-38, P.14346-R-39, P.14346-R-40.
