Description

Verge oval striking and alarm watch.

MOVEMENT: Full plate oval movement. Balance and cock missing. Oblong cock post. Pierced and engraved set-up click. Pierced and engraved cover, with ring around winding square, over blued steel stop work wheel for striking and alarm. Locking plate missing. Edge of top plate engraved with leafy stems with flower. Rectangular fusee iron post, chamfered to give lyre shape at end. Brass case bolt on dial plate, nib through dial plate. Rectangular potance riveted to top plate. Counter-potance screwed to top plate. Striking and alarm barrels with pierced and engraved panels. Blued steel striking gates. Rectangular alarm potance with curved back, rectangular counter-potance, both riveted to top plate. Pillar plate with four turned baluster pillars, with rectangular feet. Second wheel bar. Alarm second wheel bar. Split gut fusee, cut for missing chain, barrel with lip at top. Verge escapement. Train, three pinions, planted anti-clockwise. Striking train missing after the second pin wheel. Train planted anti-clockwise. Under dial hour wheel and alarm cam steel. Pinion of report missing.

DIAL PLATE: Gilt brass, oval with four tabs to fit case, engraved with foliage and two angels above, and below, the chapter ring. Underside cut away to clear the striking release level, and pin to support the pinion of report.

DIAL: Silver chapter ring engraved with radial Roman chapters between two engraved rings, the outer ring with dots at hours. Gilt brass alarm disc with radial Arabic with silver hour marker, centre engraved with foliage.

HAND: Blued steel, leaf end, pointed counter poise.

BELL: Oval with straight sides. Inside scratched with 'H', '3889' and 'ES/-/-'

CASE: Oval guilt brass with cover, ornamented in niello work. Side of body flat, pierced and engraved with four leafy dragons. Turned knobs fixed at sides and at bottom. Turned pendant with plain ring. Back and cover engraved with floral design, background filled with black wax. Inside front cover engraved with laurel wreath. Inside back cover fitted with plain oval inner case of brass? interior and (exterior?) silvered, secured with central steel screw. Case visible through pierced sides.
