Description
Small verge watch in gilt and silver gilt pair case.
MOVEMENT: Full plate movement engraved 'James Payne No 17 Foster Lane LONDON No 3161'. Balance cock with chased table and foot. Polished steel balance with wide rim. Steel regulator, on slide, reading against a scale engraved on the back plate, scale numbered on inside 5 to 20 in Arabic figures, ends engraved 'FAST' and 'SLOW'. Fusee iron post solid and formed. Polished case bolt in slot in plate with nib at side. Potance, with moulding at end of foot, screwed and counter-potance riveted to back plate. Pillar plate with four turned pillars with rings, centre wheel recessed into pillar plate, third wheel bar. Fusee and chain, set-up ratchet under dial, one lip on barrel. Verge escapement. Train planted clockwise.
BRASS EDGE: Rim flat on pillar plate.
DIAL: White, slightly convex, enamel on copper, three feet. Minute ring, single circle crossed by radial minute marks, simple Prince of Wales feathers at quarters, small vertical Arabic chapters.
HANDS: Gold spade.
INNER CASE: Plain gilt metal with cameo, rectangle with chamfered corners. 'J (?) pellet P' maker's mark. Cylindrical pendant, oval top, bulbous ends to bow. Pendant bent forward to fit outer case.
OUTER CASE (A): Silver gilt, back chased with oval with two love birds, inside four decorated rings with plain rings between. London HM 1770 and incised mark 'IW' inside
WATCH PAPERS (B & C): Two printed watch papers in outer case:
B) Nine segments. In centre 'All sorts of/ CLOCKS & WATCHES/ Made Mended & Sold/ by/ writer', under this 'J Payne/ 26 Noble & Foster'. Printed on the segments 'On/ A/ Watch// Could but our/ temper move/ like this/ machine// Not urged by/ passion nor/ delayed by/ spleen// And true/ to natures/ regulating/ power// By Vertuous/ acts distinguish every/ hour.// Then health/ & Joy would/ follow as/ they ought// The laws of/ motion and/ the laws of/ thought// SWeet health/ to pass the/ present moments o'er// And everlasting Joy when/ time shall/ be no more.'
C) Printed watch paper 'CLOCKS/ and/ WATCHES/ of all sorts, made & sold by/ James Payne./ FOSTER 17 LANE,/ near Goldsmiths Hall, Cheapside/ N. B The shop 18, St. Anns Lane'. inside border of oak leaves.
