Blunderbuss
Maker: Unknown
Blunderbuss, lockplate engraved faintly with the East India Company's merchant's mark (heart-shaped cartouche in quarters, with letters 'E', 'I' and 'C', surmounted by the figure '4') with date 1725.
Given by Robert Taylor, MA
Method of acquisition: Given (1879) by Taylor, Robert, MA
Production date: AD 1725
The donor, Robert Taylor, described this as a 'Brass blunderbuss, received in the disarming of Jounpore [Jaunpur]. It bears the company's mark with date 1725.' Taylor's euphemistic reference to 'disarming', most likely refers to Jaunpur's part in the so-called 'Indian Rebellion' of 1857, an uprising against the rule of the East India Company.
