fols. 1v-95v Origen, Commentarium in Cantica canticorum in the Latin translation of Rufinus of Aquileia (ed. Baehrens 1923, 61-198)

ORNAMENTATION
Initial [E, 6 ll.] drawn in red ink, with coiled foliate infill on green ground, followed by opening words in red capitals with green wash, for Commentarium in Cantica canticorum, Bk I (fol. 1v); red initials [3-4 ll.] with blue and green infill for Bks II-III (fols. 30v, 66r); quire marks surrounded by red and brown ink dots (fourteenth-century addition).

Notes

History note: At the Franciscan convent in Assisi by 1381 when it was listed in the catalogue of Fra Giovanni Ioli (Cenci 1981, I, 32, 222, no. 328); still there in the seventeenth century and up until the mid-nineteenth century, as it was recorded in the inventories of 1600, 1665 and 1844-1845 (Cenci 1981, II, 495, 514, 597); John Henry Middleton (1846-1896), note in his hand describing the manuscript (fol. i verso); his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 26-27 April 1897, lot 338; Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919); his gift, 1904.
