Notes

History note: Library of Notre-Dame, Paris, with its eighteenth century circular ink stamp containing the standing Virgin and Child, inscribed BIBLIOT. DE L'EGLISE DE NOTRE DAME (last two words mostly obliterated), and at the top in black ink Collectarium cum Missale Ecclesiae Parisiensis (fol. 1r). It is unclear whether these proofs of ownership predate the manuscript’s division into two portions in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, designated below as A and B. They were acquired separately by Sidney Cockerell in 1922 and bound together by his brother, Douglas Cockerell. The provenance and folio numbers of the two sections are described by Cockerell in an extended note signed 14 December 1922 (fol. i recto). A (186 fols.): W.C. Norrie and Sons, cabinet makers of Dundee; their anonymous sale, Sotheby’s, London, 20-21 December 1915, lot 179; bought by Myers and Co. of Holborn on 21 December 1915; bought by Henry Walker in December 1915; his sale, Sotheby’s, London 23-24 January 1922, lot 511; bought by Messrs Thorp of Guildford on 24 January 1922; bought by Sydney Cockerell on 20 April 1922. B (52 fols.): Renier Chalon of Mons (d. 1899); his sale, Edmond Demon, Brussels, 1890, no. 15; A.J. d’Albani; his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 28-30 May 1919, lot 826; bought by Quaritch; bought by Sydney Cockerell on 26 April 1922 and re-united with A. A and B: Sydney Cockerell’s sale, Sotheby’s, London 3 April 1957, lot 4; bought by Pierre Berès (Bulletin Pierre Berès 5, 25 September 1958); bought by Francis Wormald in 1958 (Wormald and Giles 1982, 557); presented to the Fitzwilliam Museum by his widow in October 1972.
